Scout Hostel Hike 2026 🥾

On Saturday the 28th of February, over 40 Scouts from the Scout Section of 1st Meath Dunboyne took part in a challenging and rewarding mountain hike in the Wicklow Mountains.

The group began their journey at the Wicklow Gap Car Park, ascending Tonelagee (817m), the third highest peak in Wicklow. With clear and sunny weather for most of the day, conditions were ideal for taking in the spectacular scenery. After successfully summiting Tonelagee, the Scouts continued their hike past the iconic heart-shaped lake, Lough Ouler, before making their way to Stoney Top (713m). From there, they returned to Tonelagee and began their descent towards St Kevin’s Way via Brokagh Mountain.

At St Kevin’s Lead and Zinc Mine, the group was met by Venture Leaders Méabh Ní Thiarnáin and David Renshaw, who facilitated an instructional station similar to those seen on MPCs and Sionnach weekends. During this session, Scout patrols were tested on their knowledge of the 5 Ds of Mountain Navigation: Distance, Duration, Direction, Description, and Destination. This provided an engaging and practical learning experience for all involved.

Following the instruction, the Scouts continued their descent along St Kevin’s Way, finishing their hike at the Glendalough International Hostel. That evening, after a well-earned hearty meal, the group took part in an educational quiz focused on local government, followed by a relaxing movie session.

The following morning, everyone was delighted to board the coach for the journey home to Dunboyne after a fulfilling and memorable weekend.

A particular highlight for many of the Scouts was the fun and excitement of tumbling down the mountains during the descent — a moment sure to be remembered fondly.

Overall, the hike was a great success, combining adventure, learning, teamwork, and enjoyment of the great outdoors.
