Scout CSA Weekends – Waterford Greenway 🚲

Each year our 3rd year Scouts have the option to undertake the Chief Scout Award (CSA).

This extra challenge is voluntary and allows the Scouts to promote self-development by pushing youth members out of their comfort zones. Its purpose is to motivate Scouts who want to test their limits, experience new things, and earn a significant badge to wear with pride on their uniform.

As part of this challenge, the Scouts must undertake an expedition including an over night. This year our Scouts opted to cycle the Waterford Greenway over 2 days and 1 night. We split into two groups who completed the challenge over the weekends of June 20-21 & July 4-5 2026.

Their journeys began with taking the train from Heuston station, Dublin to Plunkett Station in Waterford. A quick walk over the River Suir to collect their bikes and helmets from Waterford Greenway Bike Hire and they were off.

On the 1st day, they cycled the 48km from Waterford to Dungarvan and on the way, they took in the wonderful sights of the Greenway including:

  • Waterford Suir Valley Railway Station – an early stop for ice cream in Kilmeadon
  • Ballyvoyle Tunnel – at 400m in length, it adds a spooky element to the journey
  • Viaducts and Bridges – Crossing 11 bridges and 3 impressive viaducts, including the restored Viaducts at Kilmacthomas and Ballyvoyle
  • Scenic backdrops – the dramatic Comeragh Mountains and the coastline along the Copper Coast
  • Clonea Strand – what better way to wash off a days cycling than a dip in the sea

In the evening a dinner of local fish and chips was well deserved.

Much thanks to 11th Waterford Dungarvan Scout Group for allowing our Scouts to overnight in their Den on the sea-front at Dungarvan.

The next morning, after a quick breakfast on the seafront, they began to cycle the 48km from Dungarvan to Waterford.

The weather for both weekends was sunny, hot and dry, which brought its own challenges.

A completed journey of over 96kms over 2 days is an amazing achievement. Well done to all our Scouts for undertaking and completing this challenge.
