The Beavers Take Glendalough!
What an incredible weekend our Beavers had in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains! From Viking “panic rooms” to having lunch at the miners village, our 10km expedition through Glendalough was one for the history books.
The Big Hike 🥾
We kicked off from the International Youth Hostel and made our way through the ancient Monastic City. The scouts were on high alert with their Glendalough Bingo sheets, spotting the famous Round Tower and hunting for St. Kevin’s “Kitchen.”
We trekked out along the Green Road, walking in the footsteps of Vikings, all the way to the Miners Village at the far end of the Upper Lake. After a well-earned lunch among the ruins, we took the scenic route back via the Poulanass Waterfall and the “floating” Lower Lake Boardwalk.

Despite it being late February, Saturday was on our side! The weather in Glendalough was cool and cloudy, with a high of 6°C—perfect “hiking weather” that kept us moving without getting too hot. To celebrate smashing the 10km mark, we surprised the Beavers with ice cream at the end of the trail. There’s no better way to reward tired legs than with a 99!
Hostel Shenanigans 🏰
The fun didn’t stop at the trail’s end. The Beavers had an absolute blast back at the Youth Hostel. Between the excitement of the bunk beds, sharing stories from the day, and the general “scout spirit” in the common rooms, the energy was through the roof. It was fantastic to see them bonding, playing games, and showing such great independence away from home.
A massive well done to all our young explorers—you did the troop proud!
